If you look at /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
and /etc/sysconfig/network
you will see that when you plugged in your IP there were other things going on.
If you were to put some of your virtual sites on another IP there would then be
a file called /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:1
and if you used a third IP there would be ifcfg-eth0:2 and so on.
These files tell the ethernet card driver which IP addresses it is rsponsible
for.
Eventualy these IP addresses get to the router (physical or logical) and then
the router knows which IP addresses belong to which NIC card MAC address
The MAC Address is the NIC card hardware number.
You migtht run "/sbin/ifconfig" and "/sbin/route -n" to see how your network is
configured.
