I'm not the person who wrote the original so I won't answer for them, but as
long as the Apache version above doesn't have PHP compiled in statically it
should make no difference how Apache was installed so long as PHP wasn't
compiled into it statically. And even then it might not make a difference -
perhaps someone else could verify?

It's gotten more difficult with each generation of RaQ, especially if you
don't want to break the GUI. I understand your tentativeness, but if you
follow the following rules you should never be left with a broken Apache or
GUI:

1. Backup relevant files *and* make sure you can restore them by actually
testing a restore.
2. Do not do the "make install" step of Apache. Copy the newly created
httpd binary manually.

If you follow step 2 and restart Apache and it doesn't work you can always
copy the old httpd binary back to the proper location and restart Apache.
So there's no risk. The difficulty with an Apache install on the newer RaQs
is that if you don't compile Apache with at least the same modules already
compiled in you'll likely break something. "httpd -l" to list the modules,
also find them listed in httpd.conf. I have not had the need to recompile
on a RaQ4, but have successfully re-installed Apache versions between 1.3.20
and 1.3.22 (and earlier versions) on the RaQ2 and RaQ3 without breaking the
GUI.
