Have installed on a RAQ 4i the RAQ3-RAQ4-OpenSSH-3.0.2p.1-1.pkg from
.nl. Am trying to use from a Windows machine the SecureCRT/Secure FX
client software. Have searched the list archives and elsewhere for
information about how to set up and use RSA verification for SSH1 and
SSH2 connections, but cannot find definitive instructions for this
particular situation -- instructions vary wildly, depending on where
found.
Telnet is turned off in the main admin control panel. sshd is running,
have verified that, and will accept connections from "shell-enabled"
accounts via password authentification. However, any combo of
instructions I've used for connecting with RSA verification (using
either SSH1 and SSH2) are unsuccessful.
Upon examination, the SSH config file in /etc/ssh had every line
commented out with "#" -- I uncommented them. Some instructions tell me
to append the client-software-generated public key to the
"authorized_keys" file in /etc/ssh. There was no "authorized_keys" file
in /etc/ssh, and some instructions tell you, in that case, to create
one.
Other instructions say that client public keys should be placed in the
".ssh" directory found in /home/sites/sitexx -- yet this pkg file did
not set up any .ssh directories. Other of the directions say to create
the ".ssh" directories if they don't exist. Others go further and tell
you to place the public key in the .ssh directory and rename it
"authorized_key" (SSH1), and if for SSH2 connections, another key is to
be placed in .ssh and renamed to "authorized_key2" -- so, am very much
confused about all this. Some of these instructions also tell you to
change mode on the public keys -- varying chmods, too, of course.
Is there a sshd log that records what happens with connection attempts?
If someone here has already set up OpenSSH on a RAQ 4i and can use RSA
verification for connections from client software on a Windows machine,
would very much appreciate a step-by-step, "for dummies" description of
how to do this or a pointer to additional helpful information.
Thank you in advance for any help -- Nell Bolen
