You can force linux to allow other things, like '.', but it WILL cause you
grief ;P

for one things, some commands use a dot to seperate user.group , so you
are causing issues. 

Note that an email address is less restrictive than a system username, but
you need to use the aliases for this....

I'm not really surprised the CMU got confused...tho it would have been
nice if it had checked before creating junk ;P
