I don't think you can fix this without booting and logging in physically, unless you did something evil like letting root ssh ;P
Why is this bad? I've been told by someone I respect who makes his living at security (unless I misunderstood him) that it is no more/less risky to log in as root via ssh as it is to log in as admin and su to root.. The password goes out either way, encrypted..
In this fellows case, he could ssh in as root and that should give him the power to unf##k what he did...
