There are two Webalizer packages on that page.  One is the 
Webalizer-with-GIFs package, which correctly has a note saying 'Do not 
install if you have NEWGD installed.'  The second one is the 
Webalizer-with-PNGs, which is -meant- to be installed with the NEWGD.  
David says that he has (correctly) installed the Webalizer-with PNGs 
package.

Do try the ~stats thing, once you've waited overnight (so that it will 
actually process some data).
