thanks so much.

I bit the bullet though, and ripped out the harddrive...  since it's only one file that's flubbed up, I didn't want to lose my entire file system with all the changes that i've been working on.

Piece of cake. obtain a restore cd (buy one or burn via an ISO) boota pc
with a nic with that new bootable disk. This creates a system capable of
providing a remote boot location for your cobalt. connect that PC directly
to the cobalt with a crossover cable.

Boot the raq while holding down the S button(??? the instructions are on the
PC screen). when it prompts, boot from network, and you are all set. (the
screen on the PC will have the more detailed instructions after if boots of
the CD. The Raq will automagically rebuild itself.
