I just did exactly the same things - and it worked just fine.
Couple of points to note though -
Did you uninstall the previous version fully? Instructions were on here a
few weeks ago.
When you ran the ./webalizer2.pl file did you run it as root - I tried
initially as admin and it gave a stream of can do it errors, changed login
to su and it was just fine. It's been running now for a couple of weeks.
I did this as the previous version died after a year.
