RE: [cobalt-users] How to set up mailbox? View from outlook? Raq 3

Hi, guys. Ok, thanks for the replies, however, I must confirm a few things and ask something

A.) Super user means I can do anything for the server, I am the admin

B.) Yes, I have a domain.

C.) I want to note that the server settings I went to the email paramaters page in the cobalt user admin panel we are provided with and we entered domains in the Relay for the following Hosts/Domains field

I use save changes and get out

I would THINK that means they are READY to allow users to go into outlook (For ex) and just type
mail.domain.com for POP 3 setting AND
mail.domain.com for smtp

and the user/pass

HOWEVER, I try this and it says it cannot find the mail server

So, the pdf from cobalt says to go into the email paramaters page
fill in the domain, which I do, and save

So why can't outlook find this server? And in terms of creating names with a and what not, that doesn't make sense

if we host a domain
www.name.com

I just want that client to open outlook and VIEW/Send mail

it is still confusing me. As for this pop before smtp, is this really required? I thought I just follow the pdf instructions from cobalt on the admin page and it'll be resolved. However, it is not. Is there a DSN settings page I need to modify?

This is killing me, so simple and I can't provide myself and future customers with simple stupid email from outlook instead of just forwarding which is not acceptable

Thanks. I just wanted to clarify the few points and explain the error and updates I made to make things clearer. THANKS a ton for your help so far it means a lot to me

Everything else I get is too vague. I need to know WHAT to do, not what to do. "Setting mx record" to me = "blah blah blah" lol

If I had to guess right off the top of my head - AOL is the root of your
evil - to my knowledge (and I'm not an AOL expert) AOL can only use it's
email client to access mail.

Do you have a registered domain name - if not that is the first step, but
I'm guessing from your email that you do have a registered domain - if so,
then I would assume that you either have someone hosting your domain or you
are - either way the steps are roughly the same. Create an A record on your
DNS server pointing the name of your qube (something like mail.domain.com)
to the public ip address on the cube, additionally you will need to create
an mx record on the dns server pointing to mail.domain.com

If you are using AOL as your ISP though, I'm pretty sure that they are not
providing you a static IP address (or I am wrong about that also - I haven't
used AOL for a lot of years, and I don't have any clients that I'll support
that use AOL - way to dangerous for anything more than a single user).

I'm not familiar with super user term - I may be in way over my head, but I
think you need to go back to the fundamentals on setup - if I'm missing your
point - I apologize.

Frustration is good - it is either means your learning something or your
married

I'll be up for a bit yet so I'll try to help until the kids finally go to
bed.

Cheers

Robert

Hi Robert.

The only email I get with my domain is (I am super user, not just a client)
is forwarded mail. I set up a new 'user' with my domain, we set up aliases

I want to learn how to set up the mail on my domain so I can read/write WITH
my domain mail, NOT just read the forwarded mail

SO instead of dave@xxxxxxxxxx going to hotmail
I want a mailbox to connect to like a normal damn isp
so I can read dave@domain and send FROM dave@domain

I can't use outlook, I get errors when I try. (Aol service, is that why?)

I am not explaining this right? I hope I am

I want also to set this up for users

so you can view your domain email from outlook, NOT just depend on stupid
aliases

That's my goal in life
Did this help? Lol

Thanks, I am so frustrated with no knowing how to do this.
