Bad news. Perl 5.6 breaks the GUI. Apparently you can install a number of
Perl modules to make it play nice with the newer version of Perl. Someone
posted a message (I believe in the last 3 weeks) on one of the Cobalt lists
(likely this one, but could have been cobalt-developers) on how they
overcame the same problem you encountered. I looked for the message
briefly, but couldn't locate it in my personal archive. The quick solution,
should you have a time machine handy, is to install the newer Perl in a
different location than the existing Perl and point any scripts that should
run 5.6 to the new perl binary location.
