Mike, Thanx for the quick response.
I deleted the altmp file and I can now do whatever I wanted to do.
Just so I learn more....what are the other files in that directory ?

There is a file in /etc/locks that is causing the problem. I do not know
the name of the file although if you search the archives you should find
the exact name. A reboot may also fix the problem.
