How are you connected?
If you are trying to connect via ethernet, you need to make sure both are on the same subnet. I had problems connecting due to the network card in the computer I was connecting from. I had to make sure I was forcing it to 100Mbs and then it connected. The direct connection needs a crossover cable. Via a hub (100 base T) you need straight thru cables. If you connect incorrectly, (in my case) I could still see data, I just never could log in. I connected in terminal mode via the serial port with a null modem cable. I could not get it to do what I wanted. I did not spend enough time on it. If I tried to run vi I got weird stuff on the screen. That is what I really wanted as no one really wants to run telnet on their machine.
