Mark, did you use the --with-mysql parameter with ./configure 
when installing PHP?  It is required for any mySQL connectivity ...

There are numerous other ./configure parameters - just search at
http://google.com (cobalt php installation) for more info - just

Then use the phpinfo() function after installation to see how
your php in configured.
