[cobalt-users] ssh login fails. 'partial authentication'. eek.

hello

has anyone else encountered a situation where a raq4 (or anything 
else) will start rejecting ssh logins with the message:

	Authenticated with partial success.
	Permission denied ().

It's not a reverse-dns issue, as far as i can tell. I suspect that 
some process necessary to ssh authentication has been killed: this 
sever is frequently overtaxed, and there was a period of overloading 
just before this happened.

(the ftp server is also down, and logcheck has gone suspiciously 
quiet, but everything else is running as normal).

there's very little on the web about this, so if anyone can shed any 
light, i'd be most grateful. I need to mend it rather urgently, and 
I'd like to avoid it happening again...

ps. I am the archetypal 
adequate-programmer-turned-incompetent-sysadmin, so any theory which 
includes a serious mistake on my part is likely to be correct.
