I've never had MySQL try to install anything into /usr/local/bin. What
./configure options did you supply? Can you post *exactly* what you've
done?

Try --prefix=/home/mysql.

See above. I've done this dozens of times on RaQs with the source install
of MySQL. If it doesn't work for you I expect you're missing a "\" to
signal line continuation or something similar.
