[cobalt-users] Qube3 Remote Email Retrieval Problem

Gurus,

I've seen similar issues on this list, but so far no answers. Any help
is greatly appreciated. Here's the scenario:

ISSUE:

Multiple users within a LAN need to share a single POP3 email account,
sharedaccount@xxxxxxx, via multiple workstations and multiple mail
clients. sharedaccount@xxxxxxx is hosted by an external ISP. Cobalt
Qube3 is LAN gateway to the internet and connects via 56k modem.
Internet (web, telnet, etc) access if fine.

ATTEMPTED SOLUTION:

I configured the Qube3 to do remote retrieval with the following
parameters:

username:	sharedaccount
pass:
protocol:	POP3
server: pop.isp.com
domain: isp.com
frequency:	5

I have successfully used these parameters to pop mail using a regular
mail client.

I created a user on the Qube3 with the same username/pass, so
sharedaccount is a valid local user. I then configured client machines
to connect via IMAP to allow multiple users. IMAP users log in to the
Qube3 with Outlook Express (I know, I know..) as user sharedaccount.

PROBLEM: It only works half the time, or less. I have sent test messages
and verified that they are received, however many new messages are not
being popped from the POP3 server. For example, today I telnetted in to
the POP3 server to see what was there after users complained that they
haven't seen any new mail in 4 days. Sure enough, there were 26 new
messages (this is a low volume mail address) on the remote server, but
those were never retrieved. I was able to check mail on the remote
server with pine as well manual telnet to port 110. After re-entering
the config data in the Qube3, new mail seems to be coming in, but those
26 messages, while still on the remote host, are never retrieved by the
Qube.

Why would the Qube see some, but not all, of the available mail? Ideas?

Thanks,

*Neal
