Re: [cobalt-users] maillock errors... only rebooting fixes it as of right now.

Allan -

this is a common problem with pop servers ... - what happens is when someone
checks their mail, a temporary lock file is placed in the maillog - this
stops editing of the mailspool file.

The email client is supposed to issue a clear or "done editing" command to
the pop server when it is done with its request, after that the lock file
should be removed. Usually this happens so fast you never notice it.

Normall when I see this problem 1 of 2 things is happening

1 - there is another application that is trying to read the mail spool file
(most likely a webmail client)
2 - there is a connection problem between the client and the host (this
stops the client from issuing the clear command)

- I would make sure all patches are applied to your raq 2
 - make sure no other apps are trying to read your mail spool files
 - check to make sure the connection is solid between the client and the
server

Hello,

We are getting some strange problems on our raq2. Rebooting temporarily
corrects the problem, but it always returns. These are the errors we
receive in the /var/log/maillog file. I delete the .pop and .lock files
from the /var/spool/mail directory but they immediately return as soon as
the person rechecks their mail. Even if their mail file is empty. I have
tried restarting the daemon with no luck. The only temporary solution is a
reboot. The filesystems are not full or even close. The only solutions I
can find in the archives are to remove the .pop files. Which I have done
buy to no avail. Any ideas?
