Virgil,
Try verifying your password file isn't all mucked up. FTP in as admin
and grab the /etc/passwd file. It's world readble so you can download it.
Check to make sure your root user has a valid shell (/bin/sh by default).
Also, have you tried using SSH1 on your client also?
I know this doesn't help you get in, but it might help you see the cause
of the problem. Even though the postgresql is down/corrupted you should
still be able to telnet / ssh in. If all else fails, you might be able to
use a .rhosts file. I'm not sure if openSSH ignores rhosts or not (someone
else might know). What you can do is put a file called ".rhosts" in your
admin's home directory via ftp. The format of the file should be:
<hostname you're coming from> <username>
So if you were coming from www.machine.com your .rhosts would look like
this:
www.machine.com admin
If OpenSSH pays attention to rhosts, you should be able to login with no
password and at least look around.

No matter what I do, I get access denied.
