Did you check your logs?
That's a good place to start, just go and check /var/log/messages,
/var/log/maillog, /var/log/secure.
Also you may want to check your inetd.conf file, that's where you have
your pop3 enabled. What about other services such as telnet or ftp, do
they behave in the same way? if so, then the problem may be w/ the
inetd daemon
