Hi,
I was wondering if anyone on this list has used/deployed Java servlets/JSP
in a shared hosting environment. I am planning to offer JSP/servlet hosting
services on my RaQ, and I am not sure what issues I should be aware of (as
a system administrator) pertaining to Java.
I am looking for the answers to these questions and any related experience
anyone can share:
-- How much memory does it take to host an extensive web application? I'm
not too concerned about people hosting large PHP/CGI applications on the
server, but Java seems to require more of a load on the server since it has
to compile scripts. What is the recommended maximum number of Java
applications for a RaQ3 with 512MB RAM before the whole server starts to choke?
-- Why aren't more companies deploying Java/JSP solutions in a shared
hosting environment? Are the system requirements too hefty, or is there
just very little interest?
-- Has anyone successfully connected Java to a MySQL server on another
computer using the mm.mysql driver?
-- If you have offered Java before, do you find it worthwhile? I basically
installed it because I could sign up a couple of new customers with it;
thus I'm not sure of what its final effect will be. I'm hoping that it is
not very high-maintenance. :)
Please share your experience with these, even if it doesn't directly answer
my questions. I'm really just looking to soak up some more information on
Java solutions with a RaQ.
Thanks,
Erica
