All "open source" code that we use on our products _is_ posted for
people to look at and use. I only mentioned the RSA libraries up front
since I had another customer try to compile Apache on their own and
couldn't. When I inquired with the engineers in Mtn View, that's what I
was told about Apache: we compile Apache against those libraries for
crypto/SSL support instead of using OpenSSL. The terms of our license
agreement with RSA do not permit us to redistribute those libraries for
free.
What was also given to me was this:
"The best way to rebuild the source is to get the SRPM off of our FTP
site. Once you have the SRPM, you'll need the bsafe libraries from RSA
to build the whole thing. We can't distribute these since we license
them. I recommend they get the SRPM from us, unpack it to get the source
we build from, make their modifications, send us the patch, and have
someone from engineering rebuild an RPM for them. If their modifications
can be made into a module, they don't need the source. The apxs utility
will help you compile a module correctly. apxs will also tell you the
switches that were used in the original compilation."
Now, obviously we don't have the resources for everyone in the world to
submit Apache patches for recompilation by the engineering group. If
you have a modification to be made to Apache and _need_ it to be
recompiled against the RSA libs, I'd pursue it through the developer
channel (sign up at http://developer.cobalt.com/). That would be a much
likelier way to get something like this done than just randomly emailing
patch requests to an engineer.
Hope this clarifies things a little.
