the file system that is used by Linux in most cases is EXT2. It is
self-defragging. However, your question on "scandisk"-like software DOES
make sense - regardless of the statement from "France Telecom." the
program "fsck", which is somewhere in a bin directory, does most of the
stuff that scandisk performs.
