Who knows. It might very well be the kernel update if
others are seeing the same problem. Maybe the fix came
from the 4 reboots I performed this morning<?> I did
reset permissions on inetd back to 755, then rebooted
(again) and all has worked well since. It's now
logging to /var/log/cron which it had not done since
the kernel update was applied over the weekend.
Something finally kicked in and made it start back up.
