I don't know exactly which update that does it... (there's lots of
them...)

A bit overkill.

At least two simple solutions are possible:

  1. Simply stick 127.0.0.1 and all the other local IP addresses in the
popip.db file.

or

  2. Edit the sendmail.cf to remove the part that checks for it. Please
make sure your server is not an open-relay afterwards -- if unsure,
please use the test on http://www.ordb.org/
