Well, you only have one foot off the ledge....
The only other thing i can think of offhand, is, have you been editing the
group file or passwd? I remember proftp has/had bugs where it did squirrly
things like that if there was a typo somewhere , like leading/trailing
spaces before/after the group or user names....
