Welcome to the Cobalt World!
There is no reason you can't use mail.mydomain.com
However, the magic little gnome that lives inside your cobalt assumes you
will use mail.mydomain.com as the mailserver. Since he/she knows that's
the fact, he/she writes www.mydomain.com all over the place, including the
default home pages set up for users, and majordomo, and Gawd knows
what else.
Send regards to the Cobalt Gnome, he/she is ever present and creates
things according to the "Cobalt Way".

Yes, but no one has ever admitted to teaching that trick to the Gnome.
