By default, on the RaQ, the .htaccess "way" will authenticate users
against the RaQ's /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files.
However don't think that .htaccess protects or encrypts files or
directories in any way. It doesn't. All it does is keeps browsers from
getting in. There are lots of other ways to read these files.
