Cobalt's are manufactured using a so-called Build To Order server.
Every new machine boots from this server and gets a hostname and ip address
assigned. Once the installation is completed, some configuration files that have
been used during the installation process are wiped/moved (including the
hostname file. That is why you had this file on your machine.
