It's really amazing that there's much discussion on this topic. I'm
willing to bet a cup of coffee that the large majority of us have a list
of do's and don'ts, you can and you can't, etc. conditions that, for
whatever reason. we impose on our customers. It really doesn't matter
why..it's the set of rules.
So, if I dictate a set of rules to folks using my services, how could I
carp, question, moan or debate my provider's rules...if I don't like them,
I get a new provider...real simple.
My ISP has a rule that what we do can't impinge upon the overall operation
of the server(s) and/or diminish services of other customers.
I wrote a perl search engline that was tailored to one site...with a lot
of neat knobs an whistles...worked like a charm...until my ISP sends me
this email that says:
"Gotcha! Your script is bogging things down...please stop using it."
He doc'd the problem(but from my perspective, he didn't have to...it was
enough to hear that I was 'outside of the contract'. And, I dropped the
script right away...his server, his rules, he calls the shots.
But, nasty guy that I am...I laid in wait for his newly sanctified CIW
wizard to really do some stuff....and when HIS search engine loaded down
the server...I simply sent the ISP's original message to me back to him,
with docs.
They killed their script, since it wasn't within the system rules.
Sorry for the rant...but if you impose rules on your users, you need to
follow the ones that are imposed upon you by your provider.
