Hey All,
Well, it turned out that my hard-drive was not toasted after all, and I finally
figured out how to get past the halting-stage I was running up against durning
the restore CD process (tried it on a different DHCP/OS host machine...).
I was elated to see that the whole restore process ran through fully. When I booted
it back up it asked me for IP/Netmask/Gateway info and all that and I entered it with the
following #'s:
IP : 192.168.25.77
NetMask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 0.0.0.0
My excitement was crushed however when I found that I still cannot get web-access to the machine
through my web-browser over my port-hub/internal LAN.
At this point I must say that I'm pretty confusalated.... Wouldn't the fact that the restore
process over my ethernet-crossover cable ran smoothly indicate that I don't have a hardware
problem with my network port #1 on the back? When I try the IP # in my PC's browser, I see the
little Rx/Tx light on the cobalt light up for a second, but then the connection just "times out"
every time. I can't even do a ping to it from command line.
I know that before I did the restore I could connect to the machine direct through the serial-term
port and get a command line for root, but I'm not sure I should do that now because the machine
has just been restored. I don't even know what the default root-password would be if I did this.
What can I do now to test what the heck the problem may be?
TIA,
~ Theo
