contrary to what we say and I wouldn't recommend this but I have quite
regularly installed updates in any order I felt like most of the ones that
have dependencies will tell you and not install and I haven't seen any
problems. BUT these have not been production servers at the other end of
the county from me with paying customers sites on.
The reason that we do say load them from the bottom up i.e. chronological in
release is because during testing and SQA the tests are done a RaQs patched
to the latest level therefore it makes sense to try and follow what we did
when that worked and yes I know some of the list veterans out there will no
doubt remind me that it didn't always. Well that's the nature of software
and bugs will creep in.
So the upshot of this is install from the bottom up as best you can if a
patch complains its missing patch xxxx then find that and install it and
then continue. Within reason it shouldn't be too frightening that's why we
created the pkg system rather than you having to telnet in and download and
install rpms and edit config files - now that is scary if you don't know
what you are doing.
