This is my paranoid side coming out. Check to make sure you haven't
been haqd - it's strange that your ftp would change suddenly like
that, and changing it back to what it should be would disable it
completely.
Are you running SSH? If so, turn on telnet for a moment and see if
you can login with that. (If not running SSH, disregard this line.)
If not, the chances go way up that you've been haqd. Most common
symptom is no login via telnet or ftp.
Hope I'm wrong, but doesn't hurt to check.
