all I know is my mom -in-law's German; her fave ale is always black.

Since we're talking about Guinness, let's talk Black and Tan. Until
recently I had no clue that the layered Black and Tan is purely an American
"tradition". Apparently in the rest of the world the drink is served fully
mixed.
AFAIK, the terms "Black and Tan" and "Half and Half" are supposed to be
interchangeable, but in the US a Bass-Guinness combo is called a Black and
Tan and a Harp-Guinness combo is called a Half and Half. Unfortunately, at
many pubs/bars in the US Harp is not available, even though they are sold by
the same distributor as Bass. Though, as I understand it I Black and Tan
can really be any stout or porter mixed with any lager or ale. Dom, IIRC
you're on the other side of the drink (ocean) so perhaps you have better
knowledge on the subject than I do. Set me straight. And if other beers
are used in a Black and Tan what are the best combos.
Steve [whose on his way later today to a concert where there will be
nothing, but watery American beers]
