duuh! I am a dummy. I was answering the question from the cobalt side.
I use Putty every day and find the footprint is very minimal. I will often
have 4 or 5 putty sessions running at one time from a Win98 box at home.
(In the office I use ssh from Mandrake or Debian).
If you do not have it yet installed on your Cobalt, I would recommend
getting screen as well. It is easy to use screen, you logon and type screen
to start. If you have a new task, and want to create a "new session" just
use Ctrl a followed by c. Ctrl A could be thought of as "begin activity"
and c defines the activity of "create a new screen" like wise Ctrl A n next
screen in the session, Ctrl a p previous screen in session. type exit to
close each screen Ctrl a d will detatch your screen session so you can
safely break the connection and return to your task later or from another
location and screen -r will allow you to resume your session. As I connect
to the Raq (and the office) by modem, I find screen to be a fine friend. I
can start a task, detatch, and the process i had running in the session will
continue. Pulling an ISO to the Qube from home is nice, you just leave the
wget running and detatch. If you are disconnected due to power outages,
kids running, BlueScreen errors... screen will still be running until you
return.
I know, "More than you asked for."
