I agree that it would be nice if Cobalt occasionally released packages for
the most commonly demanded programs. However, there are literally hundreds
of programs clients want, some with several new versions released per year
and most of which can be configured many different ways, sometimes requiring
additional libraries to be installed. PHP is a perfect example. I've
installed it several hundred times on Cobalt and other Linux boxes and
literally every time I've had to do it differently to install newer
libraries, different functionality or configure differently for the needs of
the particular box and/or client. You've probably noticed that Cobalt has a
tough enough time releasing upgrades and bug fixes that work right. Imagine
the additional engineers required and support staff Cobalt would need if
they made many packages freely available. That's why it's justifiable
(though excessive for most people on this list) for Cobalt Professional
Services to charge $200 per hour to install a program. Of course
consultants like me are willing and able to do so at more reasonable costs
with flat fees.
