There is no such thing as a dumb question (but many a dumb answer) ...

Use BINARY! In general, if you can open and read a file in Notepad
(Windows) or vi (Unix), you should use ASCII. Compressed files, images
(.gif, .png and .jpg files) and executables should be transferred
using binary mode.
And this is valid for any Unix box, not only the Cobalt.
