I just added this line to my mime.types file in /etc/httpd/conf/mime.types

application/x-shockwave-flash      swf

I then restarted httpd.

But my flash files still won't play. When I visit the flash file directly
(mysite.com/flashfile.swf) What gives?


No, no addition is needed to run Flash files.
When publishing the Flash file, publish also the HTML - its in the publishing options - Then upload the Flash file and the HTML, which is the file that is going to be displayed.
