I am so paranoid, I keep them on a CDROM burned for the task from a machine
seperate from the raq, and then pull the install from there.
On the local net.

The passwd file lists the unique users on the box; there is no real way to
do what you want TTBOMK.
More importantly, perhaps, is *why* you want to do this... care to
enlighten us?

1. Create all the sites on RaQ4i-#2 and put all the files in place. Make
sure that the server is fully set up for virtual hosting and that it'll
answer any queries you send it.
>My problem is this: How do I change things so that the new RaQ4 becomes our
>primary nameserver?
2. Moritz already told you how to do this. The procedure described will
tell RaQ4i-#2 what answers to give for DNS (i.e. how to act as the primary
nameserver). The edits he mentioned are so that www.domain1.com,
www.domain2.com, www.domain3.com, and all the other DNS records that
pointed to RaQ3i now point to their new home, RaQ4i-#2.
This is not an optional step!
3. Up to this point, you're setting up RaQ4i-#2 but all traffic is still
going to RaQ3i. Now go to the registry and change the IP of the name server
from RaQ3i to RaQ4i-#2. Now all the traffic will go to your new RaQ when
the registry gets asked.
>Has anyone done this before? How much disruption will it cause?
Yes, and anything between none and total disruption of business. Just
depends on how well you do it.
Seriously, it shouldn't cause much disruption, as long as you:
a. setup the new RaQ first
b. then switch the registry info (whois)
c. then LEAVE THE OLD SERVER ON for another week or so
This will ensure that anyone with old, cached DNS records still gets an
answer by going to the old server. When their cache expires, they'll go to
your new server. In the traffic graphs, you'll see the traffic tapering off
the first server. A week after the stuff is switched over, you can unplug
the first one.
BTW, you could avoid this weekly delay by setting the TTL value in the SOA
to something really short, like one minute. But if you're not sure what
this means, then either go research it properly or don't try it at all, OK?
Better to delay handing over the server for a week and do it the way you're
comfortable.

I think it makes sense...my server is about a 1000 miles from me...my
associate can do the restore, and the CD with the upgrades will let him do
it right in the rack.
When I used to commute to my leasing business I had backups of the
programs and data in the building, at my house, and a third set that I
carried with me.
Lot's of folks laughed....until they had a crash and hired me to pull them
out of the toilet...then, the multiple sets made sense.
Now, if I could just convince my customers to submit "backup" payments,
I'd feel much better.

Subject: [cobalt-users] RaQ4 Site Usage gone bad
Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hi folks
I've got a problem with the Site Usage page on my RaQ4 GUI - basically
it's not working, and doesn't list any stats (aside from a couple of
spurious mail and ftp listings for two (out of a dozen or so) virtual
sites.
It was working originally, and the only things I've done to the server
are to edit httpd.conf to add the line for showing virtual sites via
the main site URL (pre dns changeover) and adding all the RaQ4
packages listed on the Cobalt site (from the bottom up, all apparently
installed without error).
The log files are there alright, and if I download them via ftp
they're not missing any information, but the GUI just doesn't want to
know.
Anyone seen this? Any fixes? I've searched the list archives as best
I could but didn't bring up anything like this.
I appreciate any and all advice given!
Regards,
Tim Skipper.

the ata 66 and 100 are backward compatible with ata33. you can install in
your qube3 but cobalt suggest try not to get one with high spin speed.
eg.7200 cos the power consumption can be too high
