I always thought the bios limitation was always 1024 cylinders and not 1027?
But I will call cobalt tech-support anyway.

Old bios. Versions of bios' changed. Some will only give you 528MB for a
large hard drive, others limit it to 8 GB. You might want to try Cobalt
and see if they have a newer bios for you model. And ask how large it will
handle.
But the basic answer it that it is the bios.
