I had the same problem with /var/log/maillog. My RaQ3 stopped logging
sendmail info (which it had to do on a daily basis). The message means that
the logrotate failed to kill syslogd. On my box, it's because since my last
update, syslogd didn't restart, thus it couldn't be killed. So either you
reboot your box and hope that syslogd will be launched, or try to launch
/usr/sbin/syslogd as root (it may not be a good idea, perhaps it needs some
options, I don't really know).
