Those too, but the 8086 was the workhorse chip, and the original one a
lot of other engineering was built on. As time moved on those who
needed the advanced capabilites of the 1 series more than likely used
them, but most simple control devices kept with the tried and true.
Don't forget at that time, on-chip timers where not a design
requirement due to the IC noise on the same chip. Most systems back
then (and some today) have a sepertate timing chip.
