That is an option, but not the only option. You can start MySQL with the
flag -Sg to bypass the MySQL privilege system. And that's really a more
flexibe solution since there are cases where you may forget the root user
password, but want to keep your existing databases. Here's a message I
posted with instructions. It's from 1999, but still works. The only caveat
is that I had an error in step 7. "mypassword" should be
PASSWORD("mypassword").
