It should in theory be faster than the IDE. The real question.. is it worth
doing from both a $$ & performance stand point.
As far as I'm concerned the most cost effective and reliable RAID is a O/S
independent RAID like the one that can be found at:
http://megastar.kamtronic.com/pcraid.htm
The down side is this setup won't fit internally in any of the curent Cobalt
servers.
I personally have several of these units out in operation in very large
NT/2000 servers and have even tested it with Microtests embedded Linux
products with absolute flawless operation. I am planning on using one of
these units with a modified Cobalt Raq3i by cutting a hole through the cover
on the Raq3i and feeding the IDE ribbon cable & power lead to power the
PC-Raid unit.
It's unfortunate that the Raq's are only 1U high or that the PC-Raid is not
designed to be more flexible in it's instalation. The PC-RAid technically
requires 2 5.25" half height drive spaces to mount as it was originally
designed.
FYI - This PC-RAID is a true O/S independent and hot swap device. Also
worth noting is that you can use disimilar drive brands and sizes if need
be. It will auto-config to mirror as the smaller drive.

Opinions please on RaQ 4r internal RAID vs. External Ultrawide SCSI
interface to RAID.
If I was to use 36 GIG Cheetah 10,000 RPM drives in an external RAID
through the RaQ?s External Ultrawide SCSI interface would it be as fast
and reliable as the RaQ 4r?s internal IDE Ultra ATA based RAID 1
configuration?
All opinions are greatly appreciated.
Tim
