Login through the shell (ssh or telnet).  Then type "su -", then the admin
password when prompted.  This will log you in as the "root" user.  The
portsentry files are probably owned by "root" so to edit them or change
their permissions (I'd advise against the latter) you'll have to be root.

No b/c you'd have to change the permissions or modify the ftp configuration
to allow "root" to FTP to the server for this to work.  Login through the
shell and use pico, vi, emacs or your favorite editor to edit the file.
