I ran 'rpm -qf /usr/sbin/in.smb' and it reports that
in.smb is not owned by any package

I don't think it is the smb daemon. The samba daemon
is
/usr/sbin/smbd, not /usr/sbin/in.smb. You might want
to
run 'rpm -qf /usr/sbin/in.smb' to see if it reports
that
file belonging to an RPM.
I'm very suspicious of that file. Not to mention that
samba is not run through inetd.
