On the retro-talk list, we have been asking for a Linux Client for ages.

They released a closed beta test program and it has been working just great
on my Cobalt servers. I keep saying to Craig and Eric that Cobalt users
would be a great market to tap into as some owners are REALLY hurting.

As Cobalt servers are sold as Appliances to people with no or little Linux
experience they are likely to be looking for an off-the-shelf backup
solution. People who build their own Linux Servers are likely role their
own backup solutions because they can. IMHO going after the generic Red Hat
market is going to be hard ... Cobalt Appliance owners would be an easier
market.

Originally Retrospect was only available for MacOS.

Then they released a Windows client. In fact there are many PC LANs which
are actually being backed up by a Mac. ;-)

Next they released a Retrospect for Windows ... it supports both MacOS and
Windows clients.

There is no Linux version, but a Linux client is under development.

IMHO the only Linux machine most RaQ qnd Qube owners have is the RaQ or
Qube. Having the backup software on a Windows box seems appropriate to me.

I only use Retrospect in a LAN situation (specifically within a subnet).
The server version is not restricted to a subnet so it should work over the
internet, but IMHO this level of disaster recovery backup should be done on
site.

Cheers, Malcolm
