What do you mean by convienent nickname?
Is it a CNAME? 
If so don't use CNAME. Use 'A' even if it seems redundant.
 If fact I would not put a nickname in DNS at all.

If you have a slave DNS server, make sure you set it to
act as secondary for each domain.
