Joann,
I found out the hard way that putting yourself into hosts.allow
doesn't necessarily mean that you're not going to be blocked.
PortSentry decided it didn't like my IP yesterday and I went through
nearly the same thing.
If you can figure out what it is that's tripping the flags when you
try to come in, disable that (like taking out that port in
PortSentry's config file). Until you get everything figured out you
might want to turn off PortSentry and IPChains so they don't keep
blocking you.
Check over your IPChains ruleset and see if you can figure it out that
way; you might try setting it to allow everything at first and then
slowly addy your rules back in until you figure out which one is
bumping you out.
Don't forget that when you change the rules or the configs you may
have to reboot for them to take effect (or you could use Shimi's way
of doing it, which even he says is "dangerous").
Good luck... and don't kick it. It's small and helpless. ;)
