So how does the OS Release 5.0 compare to the 3.01/4.01, etc?
It just seems that if I install 4.01 I will be going backwards from 5.0.
I'm just trying to understand the system.

You don't appear to have any of the newer patches installed. Go to
http://www.cobalt.com/support/download/raq3.eng.html
and start at the bottom of the page with
http://ftp.cobalt.com/pub/packages/raq3/eng/RaQ3-All-System-3.0.1-6168.pkg
and work upwards. Soon you will be the proud owner of a shiny new
updated RaQ3!
