Did you remove your IP from hosts.deny as well?  It shouldn't matter b/c
hosts.allow takes precedence over hosts.deny and the default if not found in
either is to grant access.  Is your IP static?  If not, perhaps the IP you
entered in hosts.allow was the not the same one you were connected with.
The only other thing I can think of is that you had a typo or an invisible
character in hosts.allow, though I'm not sure how it interprets invisible
characters.
